Hayes Township was established in 1877 and is a double township of 70.6 square miles, located on the 45th Parallel in the SW corner of Otsego County, with a population of approximately 2,700. It is bordered on the west by Antrim County, on the north by Elmira Township, on the east by Bagley and Otsego Lake Townships and on the south by Crawford County.

Year round recreation is one of Hayes Township’s real gems, from Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, ORV trails, boating, canoeing, mushroom picking, camping and hunting. In addition there is access to nearby golf courses, downhill skiing, Otsego Lake County Park and Otsego Lake State Park. There are approximately 7,498 acres of State owned land for recreational and public use in Hayes Township. Hayes Township is one of the contributors to the head waters of the Manistee and the Au Sauble Rivers.
